Making Chelmsford Home

Chelmsford Museum is looking to recruit oral history volunteers, who will help identify, record and transcribe personal histories of individuals who have migrated into Chelmsford from elsewhere in the world.

‘Making Chelmsford Home’ aims to celebrate Chelmsford’s diversity by exploring the various reasons people have decided to settle in the City and their experiences of living here – whether they’ve lived here for 5 months or 50 years.

What's involved?

The project looks to recruit 6 volunteers who will work with the museum’s Outreach & Activity Officer to find and interview participants who are happy to share their stories.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, able to commit to the project for a minimum of 6 months (flexible hours and time commitment of around 3 hours per week) and have an interest in preserving the stories of Chelmsford’s diverse residents.

No previous experience is necessary, as full training in oral history interviewing skills, recording equipment and transcribing will be provided by Essex Record Office or the Oral History Society.
